Ways of Playing Backgammon

Even with only a limited experience in playing Backgammon, you will realize that the basic rules are quite simple, yet the game offers endless variety and provides tremendous flexibility.

Of course, there are variants of the game, such as Hypergammon and Nackgammon, but Backgammon itself has variations, and the most popular are money play, match play and Chouette. In general, the regular rules apply unless otherwise stated.

In Backgammon money play, the competitors agree to play a series of games and each is to be treated individually, that is, the score of one game does not carry over to the next. As with the regular game, it will end when the checkers are removed from the board, or a double is dropped.

The scoring for Gammons and Backgammons count for their respective values, but it should be agreed upon before the game whether the Jacoby Rule will be in effect, although online it almost always is.

Unique in Backgammon money play is that games can end in a tie if the players decide to do so. Termed a settlement, it usually takes place if the game is close, or if the stakes have become very high and both do not want to risk any more.

Backgammon match play is the format used in major tournaments, and is often called Tournament Play. Here, players compete until one of them reaches the predetermined number of points to win the game. Standard rules and regulations are in force, although the Jacoby Rule is almost never employed.

Wagering in match play varies widely, with some placing their stakes on a per point basis, while others on games themselves (a series of games is called a match). In some cases, the payout is to be handed by the losing player. Settlements are not allowed in Tournament Play.

Finally there is Chouette, very popular in land based Backgammon. Players refer to it as a social game, like Bingo. Often there are at least three players (usually more) and the rules follow standard Backgammon Money Play. Because there are usually many players participating in Chouette, there should be at least two individuals who will keep tabs of the running score of each.

It should be noted that in all three Backgammon styles, money can be wagered, and as with all variants of the game, rules can be modified to add more excitement. If you have not played Backgammon yet, now is a great time to join in the fun.
